Behind the Screen: The Hunger Games

For over two decades, MTV's The Challenge has been the proving ground where reality TV's fiercest competitors come to cement their legacies. What started as a Real World/Road Rules spinoff has evolved into one of the most physically and mentally demanding competition series on television.

The franchise's expansion — with spinoffs in the USA, UK, Argentina, and Australia — speaks to a global appetite for the brand of cutthroat competition and alliance-driven gameplay that Vevmo's community has been tracking since 2007.

Thanks, never realized how tall she is! Just saw the pictures of Josh and Sam posted earlier in this thread...they look kinda similar! But I can definitely see Sam as Finnick.

I am still pouting about the Finnick casting. I really want to give this guy the benefit of the doubt... I just don't think I can. :(

We'll see how the movie is. I'm not gonna worry about it.

This CNN article has pictures of those cast for some of the other tributes for Catching Fire, specifically those from District 1, 2, and 11.

Looks like Sam Claflin as Finnick has finally been made official.

I heard something about Melissa Leo playing Mags a while back. How old is Lynn Cohen? Melissa Leo is far too young IMHO. I was rooting for Betty White.

I knew this news would be hard on you. To make you feel better, at least Peeta's hotter than everyone.

Liam Hemsworth is 6'3". Sam Claflin is 5'11". Gale will be 4 inches taller than Finnick.

Those under the age of 14, I think.
Nostalgic#228
True. I just hope this is actually a good movie and installment and not the New Moon of The Hunger Games franchise. The cast so far is amazing.

I love the character Peeta Mellark. HOWEVER, I do not find Josh Hutcherson attractive. Sorry.

I don't know about this one...definitely not who I was expecting/hoping for. 'Hunger Games': Jeffrey Wright cast as Beetee
That's...not what I pictured at all. Wasn't Beetee an old man?

I don't think they ever said how old he was, only that he was older than the female from district 3. But he was definitely described as having "ashen" skin, so I wasn't expecting a black guy...

It's definitely the complete opposite of what I was thinking as well...

That's a bit harsh don't you think? No wonder why people think these books are ****.
bayday#238
I imaged Tony Shalhoub as Beetee, NOT Jeffrey Wright...oh well, as long as they really give Oscar worthy performances I don't care.

What's harsh about it? Because based on his physical description from the books, I wasn't expecting it to be a black actor? The description directly from Catching Fire, p. 226:
Both are small in stature with ashen skin and black hair. The woman, Wiress, is probably around my mother's age and speaks in a quiet, intelligent voice...Beetee, the man, is older and somewhat fidgety. He wears glasses but spends a lot of time looking under them.
Ashen is defined as "without color, or pale gray in color...of the pale gray color of ash". Jeffrey Wright is 5'11 (not necessarily small in stature, especially when compared to Josh Hutcherson and Jennifer Lawrence) and does not have pale gray skin. And he isn't even that old - still in his 50s. The woman casted for Wiress is older than him (and looks older too). He'd have to lose a bit of weight to be considered "small in stature", in my opinion. Do I think he's a bad actor? No. Do I think his casting was the wrong decision specifically because he is black (which is what I feel you're taking offense to)? No. Do I think he came out of left field? Absolutely. The other person rumored for the role was Tony Shaloub who, in previous roles, nailed fidgety, and was fairly pale with black hair, and is closer to his 60s. I'd never even heard of Jeffrey Wright's name for this particular role until today. I'm not sure how you think that's harsh or that it's a reason for why people think the books suck...he simply does not match the physical description from Collins' book. He would have been more of a match for Chaff, the district 11 tribute ("He's dark skinned, about six feet tall" - p. 213).
Nostalgic#240
He doesn't have to match the book description or characteristics. It makes me severly sad that people think its the end of the world because of several african american characters. This isn't Twilight or Must See TV. People are acting like it is the end of the world because of "oh black guys" especially with Cinna, Rue and Jeffery White.

Rue was described as a dark-skinned character in the books. It shouldn't have been of surprise to anyone that she was portrayed by a black girl. The casting for her was absolutely perfect. I don't think Cinna's skin was ever discussed except that he looked "normal". I thought Lenny Kravitz was a good choice. It doesn't have to match the physical description, but it should. It makes the movie more accurate when compared to the book.
