Behind the Screen: The Real World: Back to Las Vegas - Ratings

The reality TV landscape has never been more crowded or more diverse. From dating shows to competition series to docusoaps, networks and streamers are betting big on unscripted content.

What sets the great shows apart is their ability to create genuine moments — the kind of unscripted drama that no writer's room could manufacture. That's what keeps fans coming back.

One thing I've always wondered was: Are these ratings included in DVR and online episode watching. I'm sure adding those ratings as well, these would be much higher...

This is a thread about the ratings. Best to take the debate on the entertainment value of the season elsewhere before the mods remind us... The season is doing well from a ratings and ad revenue perspective. To Viacom and the MTV Networks, that is really all that matters at the end of the day. Perhaps that is "smoke and mirrors" to some, but for a large group of people, being #1 in their prime demographic is clear validation of their paycheck.

Real World Las Vegas (MTV, 10pm) - 2.269 million viewers - 1.7/3 HH - 1.3/3 A18-49 - 3.0/8 W18-34 - 1.7/7 T12-17

Real World Las Vegas (MTV, 10pm) - 2.070 million viewers - 1.4/2 HH - 1.3/3 A18-49 - 2.9/8 W18-34 - 1.0/4 T12-17

I'm guessing under 2 million for the next episode as this was the worst episode possibly ever.
Bacchus#157
A 1.3 is a good number for this cable show and the season average has been great. Heck, in NBC prime time The Event only pulled a 1.1 this week - so this season has definitively shown a revival in the series and the pickup was a no-brainer.

Total viewers are meaningless in the larger scheme of things. No it wasn't the worst episode ever, either.

To be fair, it was a pretty dull episode.

In my opinion it wasn't a horrible episode compared to the past couple of seasons. I would personally rather watch this past episode over and over again than watch most of the DC or Cancun seasons.

Well looking back I wouldn't say that it was the worst episode ever in the history of Real World but within this season alone it was pretty lame.

It may not have been a great episode, but anyone who saw the promo for next week is definitely coming back.

Episode 12 Ratings Real World Las Vegas (MTV, 10pm) - 1.730 million viewers - 1.2/2 HH - 1.0/3 A18-49 The NBA playoffs pulled in over 7 million viewers last night... definitely had something to do with the huge ratings drop!
icubaby#164
that south park and the american idol finale
fabulous788#165
But American Idol ended only 5 minutes after RW started, so I wouldn't think that had anything to do with it.

I think it is because colleges are just out for the summer and high schools are full swing into proms and exams and real life time consumers.

1000 excuses for the drop, and they are all just excuses...

I don't expect people to watch Real World over an important NBA playoff game, lol... not gonna happen. :no3:

Haven't watched pro basketball since Magic and Byrd retired. Just couldn't see the point in watching 2nd best... And watching basketball is just another excuse.

Well then! I predict the ratings will be back over the 2 million range next week for the finale. We'll just have to see I guess. :/

Did I suggest that the ratings wouldn't be higher next week? Of course not. That wasn't my point -- which was both intellectual and perhaps a bit esoteric for some. Historically, finale episodes do well (even though watching people pack is pretty boring) and reunion show ratings drop, except when a season leaves many unresolved issues. I see that I'll have to be exceptionally clear: Excellent episodes, appropriately advertised, win viewers, no matter what the competition. To wit: DTWS and AI on at the same time. Top Chef Masters and RW are also on at the same time, with some crossover of viewers in the next day DVR count. Your basketball idea isn't really supported by the demographics. Basketball viewers in the 13-24 range (prime for RW) don't watch RW in any significant numbers to merit a 400,000 viewer hit to the adult rating from the prior week.

I think the NBA had a little to do with the drop, because even some of the cast was tweeting about what was happening in the game.
CrazyHorse#173
Have to admit, unless it really grabs me by the first commercial break, I sometimes watch something else instead and catch it later on Thursday.
