Behind the Screen: The Real World San Diego: La Jolla (2011)

For over two decades, MTV's The Challenge has been the proving ground where reality TV's fiercest competitors come to cement their legacies. What started as a Real World/Road Rules spinoff has evolved into one of the most physically and mentally demanding competition series on television.

The franchise's expansion — with spinoffs in the USA, UK, Argentina, and Australia — speaks to a global appetite for the brand of cutthroat competition and alliance-driven gameplay that Vevmo's community has been tracking since 2007.

I remember because I thought she got really annoying and I wanted to mute her and her perpetual "i have a cold" voice. Let's just hope they don't cast a bunch of Charlie's this season. ;)
You can't blame him for that though. You can blame whoever tried to say they were raped in the San Diego's house since they're the reason that most of the footage was taken away.

D.C.: Josh mind as well had been wallpaper. New Orleans: Eric was pretty boring, as well as Sahar. So I can see the pattern. Brooklyn and D.C. were just general opinions of what I saw, from what I watched. I didn't really watch much of Brooklyn, and I probably watched maybe 4 episodes from D.C.
Really C.J,Emilee, and Derek DC the all seemed pretty involved

Does anyone know when they will cast and how do go about that? Trying to sign a buddy up!

Since filming is set to begin soon, they probably already have a cast. They are always accepting casting tapes and you could do it for Season 27.

I don't think Devyn and Baya got short-changed on TV time; they were just forgettable people whose feature stories were boring. There were 2 episodes focusing on Baya and dancing storylines that never went anywhere and Devyn was featured with her singing and the fashion stuff and her boyfriend visiting. I'd say Scott got more short-changed than either of them but he seems a little boring since so he probably was then too.

I take exception. To me, Devyn and Baya were among the three most interesting personalities in the Brooklyn cast. Much of this is controlled by the story editor who, in my opinion, never found a way to tell their stories. If I recall correctly, Baya has said that her phobia kept her hiding from the camera/crews. That itself would have been an interesting story line -- a RW cast member who discovered she didn't want her 15 minutes.

Just a bit more confirmation...
The San Diego Film Commission confirmed that RW Productions pulled permits to film throughout San Diego this summer. While Rob Dunson, president of the San Diego Film Commission is bound by a confidentiality agreement during the production of the show, he did let us know filming is slated to start later this month and wrap up by Labor Day.
Tamika Young, a spokeswoman for MTV, said, "We have not announced anything yet, and we have not decided on the next city [for the Real World]."

Really stoked for it being in SD this year for one reason only and that's because I live in SD haha. I know someone who lives on the same street this house is on. Think I already have a idea of some of the clubs, bars, etc they might go to, there aren't THAT many really close, downtown SD is like 25 mins away.

I liked Sahar a lot! And I love San Diego - both as a city and as a Real World season!

Why do they keep doing city's they've already done before? Why not do a new city?

ahhh ok, ratings. I will say, RW: San Diego was an awesome season. The cast was really good. I never watched the first RW: New Orleans but I watched Back to New Orleans, which I also thought was a pretty good cast (although not as good as this last Vegas 2 cast). The first RW: Las Vegas was ok...for some reason, I wasn't crazy about it. I don't know why, I know there was a lot of sex and craziness, but I just don't feel the cast had any charisma. Like I wasn't particularly drawn to any of them.

Am I the only one that feels bad for the original casts because of these 'Back to' series? Years down the line kids will not bother to know/search/watch the original. But then agan this is the upcoming age.

I doubt they feel sorry for themselves. Often imitated, never duplicated...
RuffBuff#79
I don't think it matters where it is. People tune in for the cast... RW san diego had the best cast in my opinion. There cast were more down to earth real people.

I don't feel bad for the original San Diego cast, but I do have some sort of distaste for this new season already because RW14 was, IMO, the best season of the Real World and the one I related to the most. The cast really does make the show so regardless of the city, the cast makes or breaks the season. For example, Paris is an amazing city, but the cast was lame and boring. RW14 had an amazing cast and will always be remembered for that regardless of RW26.

I think it's the city that draws in the audience and the cast holds their attention. Who wouldn't want to see: Real World: Tokyo Real World: New York (Real World: Manhattan would be pretty cool) Real World: San Diego Real World: Miami IMO, it's the name of the city that shines as the title because places like this don't really shine. Real World: Nashville Real World: Houston Real World: St. Louis Jonathan Murray hit the nail on the head when he spoke about the fantasy appeal of the cities. Personally, I don't mind the "Back to" cities and if they have to return to previous cities to keep the simple minded watching, I'm cool with that. :D I just want to see an amazing cast with a big, beautiful city as their backdrop.

My cousin goes to a lot of places with the Navy and she hates San Diego. I think Tokyo would be too expensive to produce, too much of a culture shock for the cast to tough out 3 months, and probably cost cast members who couldn't afford McDonald's there. Would love to see one or a Challenge in Ireland.
ishot_JT#83
I was reading an article awhile back in which Murray talked about Louisville being a potential city but was later scrapped for the Back to Las Vegas season. I kinda already saw that BMP picking San Diego was really no surprise after reading the article. Here's an excerpt he said in the article;
“Vegas, L.A., maybe San Diego, Miami, New York– these are the cities that young people dream about living in,” Murray explained. “The show has always had a fantasy appeal to it.”
So most likely, we might not see a Nashville Fargo season of the Real World.

Well I just dropped Tokyo in there because it's a "fantasy" city. The name of the city shines and it's big enough to get lost in.

Does anyone have a "guesstimate" of when we will see the cast?? Like the first half of july. I hope they are back to 8 roomates too. Also I think Nashville or the ATL would be better than the DC season. Many young country singers want to move to Nashville but I agree you wouldn't really call it a "dream city". I also agree that if I had the money I would definately move to anywhere in California......especially LA or San Diego.

RW Nashville sounds ready made for CMT, not MTV. Snooze...

I wouldn't mind another Chicago season -- but I know the previous cast got a lot of hell from locals. But Chicago was my favorite cast and city. Definitely would be psyched if the season after Back to San Diego was Chicago.
Jmpetty1#90
Yea and if it starts filming this month it should air very soon after the challenge ends...I would say maybe around October early November (my opinion) What kind of cast members do you guys want to see? And how many roomies? Cause quite frankly I'm tired of seeing homophobia (remember Ryan from NOLA). I kinda wanna see another meltdown like Brooke from I think the Philly season. I wanna see someone who had a bad break up with a celebrity or something...a cast member who suffered hard physical and mental abuse...someone with a story (who also loves to have fun).

So just about like every other season? ;) Personally, I think it'd be cool to have two gay guys or two lesbians in the same house...and then have them fall for each other. We haven't had any seasons where a same sex couple were actually two members of the main cast. I think the dynamic of that would be interesting to see -- especially if one was extremely comfortable with their sexuality and the other was still growing into it. Although, that's probably pretty hard to plan in a casting process.
