Behind the Screen: The Challenge: Generic Thread

For over two decades, MTV's The Challenge has been the proving ground where reality TV's fiercest competitors come to cement their legacies. What started as a Real World/Road Rules spinoff has evolved into one of the most physically and mentally demanding competition series on television.

The franchise's expansion — with spinoffs in the USA, UK, Argentina, and Australia — speaks to a global appetite for the brand of cutthroat competition and alliance-driven gameplay that Vevmo's community has been tracking since 2007.

I think that BMP can get some Huge names out of the past 7 Seasons. I really hope they get as many newbies as possible. I'm just really ready for a new generation of Challengers to take over and I think this is the perfect time for this to happen.
Very true. I know A LOT of people who only watch episodes of the Real World just to know who they are once they go on the challenges. I wholeheartedly agree that some heavy hitters could come out from the newbies ( or at least some very entertaining competitors). The last 7 seasons have been striking me as a revamp of the Real World and I have wondered why BMP doesnt try harder to get people on the show from Hollywood till now. I'd love to see Kim, Bre, J.D., Jaz, Ayiiia, Jonna, and Leroy to all return as well as throwing newbies like Sam, Zach, Nate, Frank, Jemm, Knight, Bronne, Zito, Nany, Cooke and Mike Manning in just for some fresh faces who would actually be ENTERTAINING to watch

Yes I did when Chael Sonnen called out Anderson Silva and TJ found it hilarious

I also found it to be pretty funny, I almost felt like I was watching WWE or some crap like that. But yeah, it was cool seeing TJ sitting behind the champ. I meant to write about it on saturday but totally forgot.

It seems pretty obvious at this point that there needs to be at least one big name per season and the people that were seen as "big names" like JEK, Wes, Jenn, Paula, etc have gotten stale. I think they'd be crazy not to have CT on every season from here on out if they want ratings. I think the only other people who could draw like he can are Coral and the Miz...and I'm not sure which of them is less likely to come back. The next rung below those three on the ladder is probably Beth and maybe Mark. I think the only problem with Beth is that you need someone there who isn't going to get along with her and fight with her. All of her story arcs have pretty much been Beth vs Coral or the Drama Mafia or The Vets or Tonya or The Bad *****.
Well, for what it's worth, Beth gets along well with Coral. Those two and Katie were roommates in Mexico. They've known how to do what is necessary on camera as exhibited by their last challenge together. Beth and Tonya are also good friends -- no surprise to long time vevmo readers. The angst between them over the pool incident ended quickly during the summer of 2007 with an apology from Tonya. As for The Drama Mafia: MTV's episode 5 summary ends with "When all is said and done, Nehemiah, Wes, Aneesa and Beth agree to join forces in an effort to take down the other alliance -- but is Wes just putting on an act?" There is a far deeper background to the Drama Mafia which was fashioned during one of Beth's photo shoots just before the cast left for Brazil. Others present were Johanna, Trishelle, Svetlana, Mark, Syrus, Tonya and Derrick (and me). The alliance was not a surprise, and it wasn't fashioned well into the challenge. It was all fiction from the cast's perspective, creating one of the first interesting counter-alliances on a challenge. Most people weren't aware that Beth also had an excellent relationship with both Kina and Jodi -- video you won't see in any episode because it runs counter to the storyline. It's also worth asking, "Do you think Beth is going to bring her two children with her" to wherever? She is certainly not leaving them behind in LA, and I'm not available the rest of the year for diaper duty for Nicholas, as much as I adore the little guy.

Looks like another season starring Cara Maria....Sounds like the cast may be leaving fairly soon, from what I've heard, possibly right before Halloween. User image

User image User image User image Cara Maria was an official attendee at the Reality Rescue Festival over the weekend. Tori was in the area and stopped by to say hi to friends.

So, this may or may not sound stupid, but do the challengers actually get paid, regardless of whether or not they won?

Provided that they don't violate their contract, yes.

I think they get paid to wear Under Armour products

No, Under Armour pays BMP to have their contestants wear Under Armour.

I remember when they wore "Aeropostale". The cast would get tons of free hoodies, tank-tops, shirts, t-shirts of Aeropostale and had to wear them on-camera.

So they get paid just for showing up?

Not really. If you leave the game without participating in an elimination or vote off, they wont pay you.

So if they win a Elimination they get paid for winning?

Rookies get paid based on how long they were there, that is if they don't make it to the end. Vets get a flat payment no matter how long they last. But if someone gets kicked off, quit, or injured, (leaving without being voted off/eliminated) they don't get paid.

They don't get paid if they have to leave due to injury? That blows. Do they get paid any prizes they won if they have to leave due to injury?

Sure, but it is really stupid. They should just let the cast members hype the show on twitter/FB as much as possible. Spoilers are such a common thing now that I doubt it would detract (plus MOLDS13 Satellite-controlled nano-robotic cameras are already lodged in the eyes of most Challengers so she gets the live feeds anyway).
I expect that "stupid" would be the word used among BMP management about people who have contrary opinions to their own. Stand in line, my friend. Some of us have been beating this dead horse for years. They. Don't. Care. What. You. Think.

You may want to reread that challenge contract that was posted years ago. When I was representing former cast members, that was not my clear understanding of the contract. There is always a question about liability beyond immediate stabilizing medical care for injuries sustained on almost every reality show, but people who are injured are paid. For BMP to act otherwise would violate California Labor Law and any rational view of contract law I've ever encountered.

In the entertainment industry, it's commonly called an appearance fee.

Wait..on the battle of the sexes 2 reunion, some of the cast openly said they were going to appear on the next challenge (inferno 2). Veronica went as far as to say it was in Mexico.

Times were different back then. Theo on the BOTS2 reunion flat out admitted to splitting money, despite it being said on the show that it's against their contracts to do so. It was around The Island that things started to get very strict and fines were being handed out for minor infractions.

Random, but when making calls for the challenges, does BMP prefer someone who is athletic or someone who is entertaining? Then again, they do cast people like Shauvon and Casey...I might have just answered my own question.

Shauvon isn't athletic or entertaining in my opinion.

She's..something? That's what I'm wondering; why people like her Casey, Brandon, Derek- Cancun, and Danny get on challenges? They all seem so extra. place holders for the people they couldn't get I guess..

How do you group Brandon in with the rest of them?

I know its probably never going to happen, but I would Love to see Carley get back on a challenge. She was very underestimated by everybody and I think she could be great in face-offs, kinda like a hot version of Aneesa.

I'm trying to find that clip of Dustin saying that he sometimes wants to tell Nany that she's "a dumb ho" but I'm not having much luck. That would pretty much describe the situation, or at least her personality at times.
He was talking with Mike and Leroy outside Subway, if that helps. I think the conversation was broken up into two different dailies clip--one around the time Adam went home and one around the time Adam was going home the second time as best as I recall. I don't remember where it appeared in the aired episodes.
