People care about high school football mainly for two reasons, recruiting and they live in the area so they can go to the games. This has neither of it as any top prospects isnt risking a scholarship if they flop on national TV

People care because they have ties to an area. Same with pro sports teams--most people root for a local team--it's taking pride in the city winning.
