Don't think they lied. This show was announced when everyone thought the pandemic was near the end. It would be extremely difficult and expensive to film a show like this during the pandemic. Interaction with the locals, traveling around, testing, lodging for cast and crew... Just to start. It is probably why the real world reboot is stalled as well. Homecoming and Challenge can be kept in a bubble with planned locations for a short period of time.

Even when road rules was in its prime didn't it still kind of flop compared to real world... wasn't there only like 14 seasons before it was cancelled compared to over double of what real world did... didn't they try to revive road rules in 2007 when people still watched tv lol. If it's anything like RW32 then they can leave it shelved but honestly what does a modern Road Rules look like? -I think they should bring it back with celebrities / social media stars and then follow up with a civilian series
I think if they made it "retro" and forced them to not have cell phones and do things old school it could be very interesting to see how five or six strangers live on a rv traveling around. No twist is needed. But they love their twists
