Behind the Screen: The End of MTV as We Know It

For over two decades, MTV's The Challenge has been the proving ground where reality TV's fiercest competitors come to cement their legacies. What started as a Real World/Road Rules spinoff has evolved into one of the most physically and mentally demanding competition series on television.

The franchise's expansion — with spinoffs in the USA, UK, Argentina, and Australia — speaks to a global appetite for the brand of cutthroat competition and alliance-driven gameplay that Vevmo's community has been tracking since 2007.

The End of MTV as We Know It

The only show of his I watch is mayor of kingstown so its no big loss for me, but the few people I know that do have paramount have it solely for his shows. I dont know anything about entertainment laws but I am assuming the shows would stay on paramount + but have different people running them, which could very likely cause those fans to end up hating the shows they once loved. I dont really see how this is good for the future of paramount. Idk if reality tv will be enough for it to survive. I guess I will take the few extra years for the challenge but all the business moves they make seem to be shooting themselves off at the foot.

Wow.

MTV really is dead then. No way they find enough programming to keep the channel on air. You can't just run re-runs forever.

They need to do an Invasion of the Champions 2 or Champs vs Contenders or something of the sort. Really gotta lean into the "what does it take to be a challenge champ" discussion in order to drive up engagement. Casuals looooove to talk about the Mount Rushmore of The Challenge and "Who's the GOAT?" and all that base level sports talk type shit.

CosmicDiva#69

What is MTV's main programming now?

The Challenge, Tami's show, what else? Is Teen Mom still a thing?

They should bring back True Life, Made, and the cheesy dating shows from the 2000s.

CosmicDiva#70

MTV died the day they decided to make Ridiculousness their priority in daily programming.

My comment at the start of this thread didn't age well and I love that. Let me dump this spoiled milk into the trash rn.

CosmicDiva#71

Also, um. This is the chance for a Real World and even Road Rules revival. When one tree tumbles, another one is usually quick to sprout up.

CosmicDiva#72

MTV and VH1 should probably just merge as one tbh.

What's more likely, they rebuild everything The Challenge came from...or they cancel everything left and shutter it? Feels more like the latter every day.

teen mom is more than likely cancelled. They havent filmed for 6 months and theyre usually sporadically filming throughout the year.

love and hip hop, tamis cheating show, jersey shore family vacation, and the challenge are the only shows I can think of. (Is drag race still on mtv?)  even catfish is gone lol

MTV needs to play old episodes of NEXT, Room Raiders, Boiling Point, and all those shows they used to play. I think it would be interesting to this generation. Bring back good celebrealirt and find a niche like Bravo & TLC have.

Flopnanas#77

The challenge is NEXT?!

The challenge is NEXT?!

Either they're shuttering the network and The Challenge never had a chance or they're gonna revive their reality tv around The Challenge.

It's a coinflip at this point.

Oh yea MTV done done. Hated it but that show filled 90% of their programming and then canceling it shows to me that was a decision made and they are moving towards ending the network  I see Tami's show and Teen Mom ending and Jersey Shore and Challenge moving to Paramount thus ending the era of MTV.

I feel like this is a sign MTV isn't dead. They cancelled a terrible show that ruined their network. Didn't they fire the idiot over programming at MTV? Hopefully they have something planned to revive the network. They should contact me

I agree. Ridiculousness may have paid some bills but it was a total brand destroyer.

There's a reason Love Island and Love Is Blind do so well. There's a reason Survivor and Big Brother still pull in millions of viewers despite being a shell of what they once were. Reality TV still makes money.

I can see a scenario where they rebuild their brand as a competitive/romantic RTV hub.

Flopnanas#83

There's just no cast they can assemble that will make the show skyrocket to close to a million viewers again these days. If 40 didn't do it nothing will

40 was terrible. Cast was mid, aesthetics were cheap, marketing was terrible, format was horrendous, and the editing was atrocious. They got lucky they got the ratings they did.

Flopnanas#85

The young demographic aren't going to watch a cast of mostly pushing 40 year olds do challenges and the current audience of loyal watchers clearly aren't enough... it's OVER!

killakashhh#86

Even tho we're getting robbed of Amber getting her 2nd win or kam getting her first or ashley/laurel getting her 3rd, it brings a smile to my face at the thought of never having to see tori Michele devin and olivia ever again

Tvandcoffee#87

The sad thing is unless they finally release their content thats been in the vault, rob is still going to make a killing on the reruns. I did a quick scroll of whats going to be aired in the next few days and its just a bunch of movies, ridiculousness, and big bang theory (ew).

They need to come up with new content quick if the challenge and jsfv are the only content they have for the future, and they want to focus on paramount.

There's simply not a single viable reality tv personality that's bringing in more than a couple of thousands viewers to the show right now, at best. You need a great cast, but a great cast isn't the only thing.

You need an excellent format, bright uniforms, a stunning location, decent production value in the dailies and eliminations, a streaming service offering next day episodes to keep an engaged fanbase throughout the season, and editors that don't cut out all the drama.

If anything will save The Challenge, it will be positive word of mouth.

Seattlegirl#89

Didn’t an article said they will be producing more reality shows? MTV Latin America just brought back and got done filming a new ex on the beach.

This show probably costs pennies to create. Yeah, it's bad. Is Catfish even still creating new episodes?

Sportsman180#91

This is absolutely insane. How was he getting paid that much? How the DOWN UNDER did he declare bankruptcy?
