Behind the Screen: The Challenge: State of the Culture

For over two decades, MTV's The Challenge has been the proving ground where reality TV's fiercest competitors come to cement their legacies. What started as a Real World/Road Rules spinoff has evolved into one of the most physically and mentally demanding competition series on television.

The franchise's expansion — with spinoffs in the USA, UK, Argentina, and Australia — speaks to a global appetite for the brand of cutthroat competition and alliance-driven gameplay that Vevmo's community has been tracking since 2007.

The Challenge: State of the Culture

WittyWrath ·

I along with a few others are guilty of derailing threads with our discussion of African Americans in association to The Challenge along with other shows like Real World, Big Brother, and AYTO so I thought it would be better if we had a specific thread for this topic.

I liked how they showed Nelson and davonne having a conversation about how much it meant to them to be in Africa. I wish that got explored more especially since a good amount of the cast is black

AHHHH this thread is gonna be poppin.. as it shouldddd

One of my favorite stories about POC having each other’s backs was when Brandon Nelson said how Aneesa hit him up around the time of FM2 to be welcoming as there are so few minorities on the show

Remember when Devyn had that segment on Free Agents talking about how that season was like a horror movie because all the black people were leaving first lol

I'm gonna be blunt (no smoke)

MTV and bmp are catering toothed younger white demographic since Vh1 caters to the ratchet black demographic. .. Which MTV has never been interested in

I know of people who love davonne from bb17 and 18 but they aren't watching MTV to keep up with her. Mrstilstanding on YouTube for example loved her character but he isn't watching her on the challenge even if she lasts a long time... He and many others solely rely on vh1 for entertainment

Viacom basically has the best of both worlds...tami Roman Meghan James and other ratchets belong on vh1, whereas MTV is trying to hook younger viewers of a different demographic. MTV just has deplorable cast choices cause we should've got Jamie (explosion) tyara (bad blood) and many others. But that ain't happening

We need more dominant African people on the show. It's been a long time since we had someone like that. All the male AA become someone's lackey and never learn to think and lead bythemselves. Same with the ladies but I think Kam (despite her annoying Queen thing sometimes) is representing that good.

flyguy#11

Kam or Nelson will be our next AA champs. Hopefully on the same season

flyguy#12

I honestly feel like in a duel format they’d both be unstoppable in elims but would have to work in the final

also to piggy back on, Vh1 shows are good for an Instagram conversation or to talk to a friend at work about the next day but MANNNNN they have gotten terrible. Lucky for them a viral video of a fight or glass thrown  keeps them going because Mona Scott is really dragging the bottom of the barrell with the fake storylines nowadays

Kam and Nelson are our only hopes right now but considering they don’t worship the ground John walks on their time on the show is probably in for a short life span. They’d much rather have Leroy

xHollyangel#15

Nelson is horrible and the only way he becomes champ is if the format is a big team challenge or he has a powerhouse partner. I definitely see Kam become champion sooner than him.

he’s got 7 elimination wins and actively tried to improve his puzzle skills. He wasn’t bad at any puzzle in the Invasion final. He’s focused and most people on the show like him so his social game is good as well.

we can’t say he’d never win because as we all know he beat CT to win Invasion *sips*

Darrell and Nehemiah are the only two black male champs to compete in the last decade which is WILD. Nelson and Kam definitely have the potential to be a part of the champs club and I’m glad they have been dominating on the elimination side

so we’re ignoring the fact that he was two minutes away from winning Invasion?

I said in a previous thread but if Darrell wasn’t consistently robbed by production he could be that Older Brother/Father type character to Nelson. To develop him further but no they’d rather show that same storyline but with John and Tony

That just shows how much his game sucks. Having a good elimination record just shows that you aren't on the top of the totem poll because he keep getting either last place on dailies or get sent in by the people in power. He was good at the final of Invasions and that was pretty much is only good showcasing. Being liked on the social game doesn't take people far. Having the respect and fear put in others and others knowing you are a force to be reckon with puts you in finals. Never say never but is chances aren't high. Also you do realise if he did beat CT he beat a broken down dad bod version of CT right lmao.

Mona Scott gets credited as this omniscient end all be all ruler of love and hip hip but she's a victim of a bad sloppy contract with Viacom.  Love and hip hip is produced by 3 companies including Monami entertainment. Mona has little involvement in what is produced for TV episodes.

Stefan Geraud Stephanie Gayle and Toby probably have more direct involvement with the production then Mona Scott's big headed ***

Well Darrell won the first champs vs pros if that counts :x but yeah that's sad.

Anyways the black demographic of The Challenge is always going to be garbage because they continue to cast people like Floproy and Dustrick Henry. I am praying for Kam and Nelson to pull out a challenge win in the near future, but something has to change.

kvm1977#31

Look back to the Inferno...Syrus Coral Darrell and Christena made the final. Two minority women, Veronica and Coral, literally ran the show. I dont know where it went wrong...JEK?...but either on race seemed irrelevant to me. It was about friendships and competing. We had better black competitors though with Alton and Darrell. Nelson isnt on that level.
