Behind the Screen: The Challenge: Spies, Lies and Allies - Ratings

For over two decades, MTV's The Challenge has been the proving ground where reality TV's fiercest competitors come to cement their legacies. What started as a Real World/Road Rules spinoff has evolved into one of the most physically and mentally demanding competition series on television.

The franchise's expansion — with spinoffs in the USA, UK, Argentina, and Australia — speaks to a global appetite for the brand of cutthroat competition and alliance-driven gameplay that Vevmo's community has been tracking since 2007.

I have no clue what the ratings are like for any season of The Challenge in the US. Can someone fill me in, and how it compared to older seasons & all stars etc...

The Challenge: Spies, Lies and Allies - Ratings

I have no clue what the ratings are like for any season of The Challenge in the US. Can someone fill me in, and how it compared to older seasons & all stars etc?

Golden Age seasons like the Inferno were regularly over one million viewers.

With no streaming services and when everyone had cable

a season as recent as Total Madness was drawing a million viewers. Or near it.

  • If Total Madness got 1 million then seasons back then had to be pulling higher ratings than over 1 million?
  • Did it ever got the numbers that Jersey Shore got when it was in their prime?

If the ratings were good for current cable standards they would be pushing out another season quickly and not continuously delaying filming. Giggles.

True--unless there's other reasons for the delay--I'm sure COVID isn't helping right now

  • No the Challenge never got Jersey Shore ratings. I remember someone releasing a graphic of the early Challenge ratings and they were always over a million. Sometimes approaching 2 million. This was around the Inferno.

Exactly. Why people are trying to make up excuses over the current seasons ratings is beyond me. It was a flop and there's obviously a problem as evident by the show's tweets asking fans if they want another Exes or Rivals season and like you said continuing to delay filming. I think they're trying to figure out which direction they need to go.  At least I hope that's what they're doing. A drastic change is needed.

They've filmed plenty during covid and when it was worse and restrictions were so much more tight. Try again.

Goes to show they def planned on making a spy kids trilogy and now they see the blowback from their casual audience now too. Nobody wants it. Nobody wants these BB dorks on the show.

so they'll delay til March and do it all anyway

I knew the ratings were terrible when tori on the beginning of one of her challenge podcast episodes stated that the episode that just aired was the highest watched episode since the season began lol

I knew the ratings were terrible when PR released the names on departure day.

Did PR not say the spinoff was delayed due to COVID?

So according to Wikipedia (which doesn't include the ratings of any season before FM2), BOTE had the highest average number of viewers per episode (1.937)

Rivals is a close second (1.818) and has the record for the most viewed single episode which is 2.37 millions.

TM had the best ratings since BOTE2

DA saw a bit of a decline over TM but still had good ratings compared to most seasons that came after BOTE2

    SLA ratings were unusually low...

Come thru with them receipts!  I wish I could remember where I saw the ratings for the seasons around Inferno 1. I remember it was well over a million and me being surprised at how high the ratings were.

    PinkRose#1005

As bad as SLA ratings are it was still their highest rated show on their dying network and there hasn't been talk of cancellation in any form because cable ratings are lower hence now they also look at the "live+3" ratings since like FR time. The only times I have heard this show were in talks of cancellation were after the airing of  inferno 3 and then Cutthroat/FM2 era. If you get the numbers of cutthroat-FM 2  compared it with current ratings they would be amazing but at that time they were horrible for the network since it was during Jersey Shore and Teen Mom Prime bringing millions of viewers each week.  The challenge was their least watched show during that era then they came out the innovate themes of rivals and exes that help put in some live.

I just never understood why they air ridiculousness 100 million times a week yet cant give the new challenge episode a couple repeats throughout the week considering as you said its still the highest rated show even with the tragic ratings.
