I don't think it was anything specific about the Ruins. From what's been said by a few of the cast-members that The Gauntlet 3 was the last 'fun' challenge. The theme of the Island was more survivoresque so it's safe to think that part of what made that challenge difficult was how miserable it was to go without basic luxuries (ie. people weren't gonna have a good time) and then you only really have the Duel 2 in between which a lot of cast members weren't on. So it might seem like the Ruins was particularly awful but I think it had been a growing trend.

It's probably the fact that if your name isn't Evan, Johnny, or Kenny, you either didn't do anything, let them do all the work and got sent home OR were on the other team, lost all the time, didn't do anything, and got sent home. Derrick said he hated it too and he ended up with money in the end.

I strongly disagree with the statement in bold above, unfortunately I am unable to elaborate for a variety of reasons; but, I think you do correctly identify some of the environmental effects that have caused friction for the cast. What I do think it is fair to state is that early in the challenge series there was a sense of family among the cast, even when a couple of family members may have been dysfunctional. Things have changed in recent seasons. Some "elder" cast, in particularly, have commented about this during social gatherings I've attended over the years. I don't know if the preceived differences relate to a change in philosophy by BMP -- perhaps perceiving that attempting to force drama might create better ratings, or at least stop the slide. Or, it may be that changes in challenge leadership/crew whose personalities and production styles differ from the early years . Another possibility is that the make up and diversity (not race diversity) of the cast members, themselves, have created a different environment over time [Natural Evolution]. Personally, I'd like to think the change has not been intentional; but, frankly what Mary-Ellis Bunim started as a labor of love has become dominated by the reality of the business environment. The arts and capitalism have always had a rocky relationship. I've heard Jon Murray speak very passionately about some of the early seasons of the RW and the significant stories they told, and suspect he'd be happier (though poorer) if things were the way they used to be.

I know a guy who makes some serious bank off doing commercials in between his sporadic TV roles. He was under a year contract on a sitcom that was canceled after only like 1 or 2 episodes which paid for his house, so it is all gravy for him.

Oh yeah, she became hated once she got in with JEK. She got super close with Evan and Kenny and was part of their alliance and people (even castmembers like Katie) said her attitude changed.  

I didnt like her on the ruins either

She was always so bland to me

She was always such a star to the world
