Behind the Screen: Return to Duty: Ryan Conklin - MTV

For over two decades, MTV's The Challenge has been the proving ground where reality TV's fiercest competitors come to cement their legacies. What started as a Real World/Road Rules spinoff has evolved into one of the most physically and mentally demanding competition series on television.

The franchise's expansion — with spinoffs in the USA, UK, Argentina, and Australia — speaks to a global appetite for the brand of cutthroat competition and alliance-driven gameplay that Vevmo's community has been tracking since 2007.

Definitely looking forward to it. Hope Ryan is still doing all right and may he come home soon...

This is going to be great. At least for me with this war as there is not that much news or coverage on the prespective of the people fighting...

Return to Duty: Ryan Conklin - MTV

Bacchus ·
Ryan Conklin returns to MTV on Veteran's day, November 11th. Viewers of The Real World Brooklyn will vividly remember the emotional moment when cast member, and Iraq Army vet, Ryan Conklin was unexpectedly recalled for a second tour of duty. Return to Duty is Ryan's personal and gritty documentary of his return as part of the Joint Security Station Saydiyah in Iraq and will show him at work as an infantryman patrolling the streets of Baghdad Equipped with his own hand held video camera, and the addition of a camera crew embedded with his unit, it's a soldier's view of America's changing military presence in the long war in Iraq. His very close-knit family back home must cope with the fear and absence of their son fighting overseas once again; while his new found relationship with Brooklyn Real World roommate Baya Voce is put to a critical test. Edit: The show is now scheduled to premiere at 9PM, right before The Ruins.

I am so excited for this!

why isn't MTV Canada showing this I'm sick of them not showing BMP stuff just for the Hills or the City or Peak Season and the 11th is Rememberance day here so it'd be perfect

Now this will definitely be something to see and I'm glad to see inside what's going on with him over there.

I am looking forward to it. I think CNN probably does the best job overall still covering Iraq though its focus seems to be shifting to Afghanistan.

Wow, I am looking forward to this and dreading it! My husband is gone for training right now with the army and we are facing a possible deployment in the next year. But, I love Ryan and can't wait to see him on my TV again. (ps- hi everyone, I've been MIA lately while I do the military wife thing...)

Hahaha good to see you back! I am excited for this as well since my man is deployed to Iraq too, and doing a job very similar to Ryan's. I'll be watching this to get a glimpse of both of their experiences. (Hopefully it won't be to hard to watch...).

What did they show in the commercial? If you can remember... The only thing they have online is that one clip.

They showed him getting the call from the episode, and they showed his parents and Baya saying goodbye to him at the airport. Baya said something like "Its not like he's leaving for school...". Thats all I got. lol.

I can't wait. Although there hasn't been much promotion from MTV.

There really hasn't been. Which is weird cause it will probably be more interesting than most of what they have on there.

MTV's going to kicking themselves in the next couple years when both Real World and The Challenges are cancelled...seriously, *** is up with their promotion? You would think they would be promoting the hell out of this, considering Brooklyn was one the more recent higher rated seasons and Ryan seemed to be the favorite.

As some have said, the Military is at War but the Country is not. Maybe they do not see this as something worth promoting from an income perspective. MTV programming is so binge and purge anyway--16 & Pregnant, Made, now World's Strictest Parents. They need to have a set line up. Who the heck knows when anything is coming on that network anymore.

I'm just saying in general, Ryan is a pretty popular Real Worlder, regardless of the fact what this has to do with or not, they should be promoting it either way. Its good for the franchise as well.

I had MTV on in the background last night for about 2 hours, hoping to catch a commercial, and didn't see one. They aren't promoting it at all it seems like.
LilysMom#24
I think that MTV has just a general decline in the promotion of all of their shows and specials. Look at Gone too Far, barely anybody knew it was going to be aired at all.

It really isn't much of a promo but check to see when the Ruins is on and you will likely see it then.

I agree with you. I think since there is no possibility of a second season w/ DJ AM's death and they were already in it for the production costs they are just treating it as a throw away program. Since Ryan says he won't be doing the Challenges, they probably don't see a big reason to push Return to Duty regardless of his past popularity since it won't benefit them in the future. MTV is increasingly schizo IMO.

I think Ryan is bad for the franchise in so much as his story sets the bar pretty high and I doubt they will top it anytime soon i.e. audience expectations will not be met if they are looking for something of equal substance.

It is not even just the special though, even their long time shows are getting barely any promotion. I think that is where the cut a significant part of their budget.

I don't disagree. Their own ads displace paid ads so they go with the paid stuff. It feels to me almost as if they are focusing on the internet and more using their air time to try to drive traffic to their web content as opposed to pull in regular viewers.
SMTnyu#31
This is just a one night special right? I read somewhere about it being more than one episode and I got confused...
