The Rum Diary is terrible in my book. The story was stupid. Nothing really happened. The plot was not crafted as well as it could have been and was nebulous at best. The characters were flat (not talking of Amanda Heard of course). And this movie perpetuates negative stereotypes of people of color. If you get *****ed or r*ped by a dark native, then all of a sudden you are worth nothing and deserved to get your ***** kicked to the curb. I don't wish bad things to others, but I am glad that the movie tanked in box offices sales because they honestly deserve it. I cannot believe that my friends dragged me to such a movie.

This is so wrong on so many levels. And the only way she is able to redeem herself and to pick up the pieces of her life is through ending up with Johnny D's character's di ck.
Rum Diary is based on a Hunter S. Thompson novel, and if you have seen Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas, no one has had success so far properly transitioning The Good Doctor's works for the big screen. Read the books and in both cases you will get way more out of the experience.

I understand your argument that there is something lost in translation when directors, design artists, and actors get involved. But on the other hand, there are some books that should never be made for the silver screen, and this is one of those books.

Directors are incapable of toning him down and writers cannot capture his way of telling a story in a script.

More people would have seen these films if they were authentic. I get that big names are supposed to draw numbers... but Hollywood needs to give some other types of people a chance. My opinion on it has always been that it is because there isn't a huge body of popular Asian literature that has ever reached the west. A 1000 years of beautiful poetry doesn't give people a lot to work with IMO. There just doesn't seem to be a strong written history that is adaptable to film to draw from that Hollywood has to work with. I would love to find a huge body of Asian literature(i.e. classic fiction novels) to dive into, but there really isn't one out there, at least not in English translation.

I thought Captain America was terrible but the reviews seemed good. I think one of the stupidest movies in the last couple of years was 2012...
