Behind the Screen: Reality Dogs

For over two decades, MTV's The Challenge has been the proving ground where reality TV's fiercest competitors come to cement their legacies. What started as a Real World/Road Rules spinoff has evolved into one of the most physically and mentally demanding competition series on television.

The franchise's expansion — with spinoffs in the USA, UK, Argentina, and Australia — speaks to a global appetite for the brand of cutthroat competition and alliance-driven gameplay that Vevmo's community has been tracking since 2007.

Arfful debut for CBS's 'American Dog' New reality show draws 9.5 million total viewers By Toni Fitzgerald July 11, 2008 CBS’s newest reality show proved top dog last night in the demos that the network usually excels in. “Greatest American Dog’s” debut pulled 9.5 million total viewers at 8 p.m., according to Nielsen overnights, 2.5 million ahead of the No. 2 program in the timeslot, Fox’s “Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?” In fact, “Dog” would have ranked No. 2 on all of broadcast last week with that audience, behind only NBC’s “America’s Got Talent.” The show also did well among adults 25-54, averaging a 2.7, 29 percent ahead of second-place Fox’s 2.1. Media buyers felt the show, in which pets and their owners live together and compete in various tasks, had potential, especially among the older audience that tends to watch CBS. Though “Dog” managed just a 2.1 in adults 18-49, it was enough to win the slot in that demo, too. @2008 Media Life Magazine
