Behind the Screen: The Real World: Cancun - Ratings

The reality TV landscape has never been more crowded or more diverse. From dating shows to competition series to docusoaps, networks and streamers are betting big on unscripted content.

What sets the great shows apart is their ability to create genuine moments — the kind of unscripted drama that no writer's room could manufacture. That's what keeps fans coming back.

I am sure it did okay. I think they promoted it somewhat for the past few weeks...

TVbythenumbers say that they shall provide the numbers tomorrow. Can't wait to see if the show did well or not.

At least they didn't show the same preview everytime like The Duel II. Look at where the ratings ended up due to that, but it came out a fighter by breaking that 2 million mark and making number 3 in the Top 10.

Hopefully it did well. I am not expecting the best, but not hoping for the worst.

I'm hoping it did well, but don't think it did as well as Brooklyn's premiere.

I have a feeling the numbers will be good. Real World Cancun was even a trending topic on Twitter. That has to mean something, right? ;)

If anything I think it will be because they didn't promote Cancun as much as they did Brooklyn. We'll see.

That's true. I expect something good, but not great.

I asked over at TVbythenumbers if they were going to post the numbers. Since Robert (creator) is gone for a little bit, we won't be seeing those numbers today.

I wouldn't count on it. Usually, they release the numbers the day after the show's airing if they've recieved it early from MTV or they just include it in the weekly cable data every Tuesday. But, we can be sure that we will see numbers, if Robert is there because he is the one that pays for all of this data I believe. When Robert comes back, I'll put in a simple Twitter request if the numbers aren't posted in this weeks cable data like expected and we can only hope that he will agree with sending the big number.

okay, thanks. Because I really want to know.

Did anybody ever get the ratings?

I don't think they are in yet. :P

I do not think we are going to see the ratings for Episode 1. Well, the full number to be exact. I'm still looking forward to Media Life Magazine's weekly top 10 chart. TVbythenumbers used to post numbers outside of the top 20 shows for cable every Tuesday... but for some reason they just stopped and only posted numbers in the top 20.

So it probably didn't make the top 20?

Well, we don't know but it would probably have to do 3.7 million overall viewers to make the top 20 cable shows. We will see how it does in the 18-34 demo via Media Life, if it makes the top 10. As for why TVbythenumbers is not offering shows out of the top 20, I think I read somewhere that Nielsen was giving him a hard time about doing so and thus he has been negotiating with them for their data. Doesn't sound like it is going well.

Real World XXII ended up not making the top 10.

Quite surprising as normally I can gauge the ratings just by the amount of traffic in that hour here and it was busy. No one is talking about the ratings and MTV has not put out their normal spin happy press release (i.e. The Real World Cancun DOMINATED the 3-6.5 year old male Maine **** cat demo and was the #1 cable show for the day with housewives born on April 9th in American Samoa. ) So, I guess we will just have to sit tight and see if something crops up in the next few weeks...
blanky667#20
The only thing that I really care about in show ratings are the full number. For all we know, it could've made number 1 in the target demo (12-18), like you stated Bacchus, but did not do well in the older demographics. I don't think we will be getting any full numbers for the show until late July, since the person with the numbers will be gone for that long.
Dartagnan#21
Sad that it didn't make top 10, but B has a good point.

From The Washington Post:
LOSERS "Real World Cancun." "Real World" -- so over? Cancun opened Wednesday and only 1.4 million bothered to tune in. That's the franchise's smallest opening audience ever.

Wow. Those are very, very disappointing numbers. They pulled 1.7 in the 18-34 demo alone (2.3 million overall) with The Real World Brooklyn premiere. I am sure the executives at MTV are scratching their heads.

Smallest opening audience EVER?! Wow...
saltvinegar#25
maybe if MTV would actually promote the show the ratings would be better. I am surprised last season did better because this cast is so much more entertaining.
Dartagnan#26
That's sad. MTV is really messing up.

You've seen one episode. I don't have anything against the Cancun cast, but I prefer seasons like Brooklyn more. I enjoy watching people strive to reach their career goals and personal goals rather than two roommates making out with a daughter and her mother. That's just me, though.

I'm shocked actually....a lot of people where talking about this season. At the same time, I know people who decided to skip this season, because it's in Cancun, and they only expect Drunk, party, crazy people....which IMO is not the case. I hope Cancun can increase their ratings, if not it will all come down to RWDC to save the series.

How did the premiere episode prove to you that this is not the case? It only made my opinion of that more concrete. But everyone has a right to their own opinion :).

We can't forget that this show ran in repeats everyday (except yesterday) over the last week, so hopefully it was sampled by a lot of people who will tune in and make the second episode a bigger hit in the ratings. I think it is a quality show and thus we should see an improvement next week.
Dartagnan#31
Hopefully B. I mean it wasn't that bad of an episode. And I think the ratings issue still boils down to the promotion.
