Behind the Screen: The MTV Name is Ironic

For over two decades, MTV's The Challenge has been the proving ground where reality TV's fiercest competitors come to cement their legacies. What started as a Real World/Road Rules spinoff has evolved into one of the most physically and mentally demanding competition series on television.

The franchise's expansion — with spinoffs in the USA, UK, Argentina, and Australia — speaks to a global appetite for the brand of cutthroat competition and alliance-driven gameplay that Vevmo's community has been tracking since 2007.

It's just no music anymore so RTV would be a good name...

I know, we were talking that at work one day. All they show is reality shows...

The MTV Name is Ironic

Yeah they do have some good shows but all they do is play them over and over again. (like vh1, but at least Vh1 plays some music) but MTV never plays music anymore. Sometimes they will play it a couple hours in the morning but that's it. They don't even have TRL anymore. MTV is called Music Television and they don't play music on it. I liked how MTV was 10 years ago with the music videos, TRL and the very few reality tv shows. Now it's just all reality shows. They should just rename it to RTV Reality Televison lol.

I agree Ryan. It's just no music anymore so RTV would be a good name.

I miss TRL! I used to watch it almost daily.

Haha remember Daria and Undressed?

I agree... barely any music anymore. They play music videos very early in the morning, when many veiwers are dead asleep.

Me too! TRL used to be my favorite show on MTV. There's hardly any music videos on MTV these days.

They don't stop tv shows til 5 or 6 am, the latest station for that sort of thing around here. Vh1 stops shows and plays music 4am and later. But yes, hardly any music is ever played anymore.

Um yeah, I was bummed about that too. Reno 911 was brilliant. But Daria FTW! P.S...does anyone else remember Spider Games? They only showed about half a season, and then it just...stopped. Cliffhanger and all!

OMG, Spider Games lol, I used to watch that. I completely forgot about that show.

I also liked the show "Rich Girls" with Tommy Hilfiger's daughter and her friend. It was only on for one season (back in 2004 I think).

I loved me some Daria. I agree that MTV is not the same anymore, but most channels are the same way. Take channels like VH1, E!, Cartoon Network, TVLand, Scifi (or SyFy), TLC, History, Discovery, A&E, etc. and they are all far cries from what they originally set out to be. They have all become reality show havens (or in Cartoon Network's case, show live action). Heck, E! was originally a channel that played all the newest movie trailers non stop, similar to how MTV played music. I read a very interesting article about Network Decay not too long ago where it talked about how most channels are completely different now. I mean, it's hard to remember TLC even stands for the The Learning Channel at this point.
