Behind the Screen: Fresh Meat II - Ratings

For over two decades, MTV's The Challenge has been the proving ground where reality TV's fiercest competitors come to cement their legacies. What started as a Real World/Road Rules spinoff has evolved into one of the most physically and mentally demanding competition series on television.

The franchise's expansion — with spinoffs in the USA, UK, Argentina, and Australia — speaks to a global appetite for the brand of cutthroat competition and alliance-driven gameplay that Vevmo's community has been tracking since 2007.

That can be true, but Jersey Shore got up to 4 million towards the end and it was on MTV.

For comparisons sake: Episode 9 Ratings Real World Road Rules Challenge - 1.114 million viewers - 0.8/1 HH - 0.7/2 A18-49 Sunday's "Jersey Shore Blowout" before the MTV awards - 1.706 million viewers - 1.2/2 HH - 0.8/3 A18-49 Its tough to get good ratings for anything in the Summer, but these ratings for new Jersey Shore material, which MTV promoed the hell out of AND put before their third highest rated telecast of the year, give me some hope for a renewal. Also instructive is this post on tvbythenumbers.com where you can see just how poorly MTV is doing compared to 7-8 years ago where they regularly dominated the top 10 shows of the week. FMIIs numbers aren't far below this, and the Ruins would have typically made this list. http://tvbythenumbers.com/2010/05/04/cable-rankings-18-4918-34-nba-playoffs-top-18-49-viewing-south-park-the-hills-tops-with-18-34/50482#more-50482

we also have to remember that for the last two weeks the show has been airing in the middle of the stanley cup hockey games so that probably takes away from the ratings. i know in my house i've had to watch the episodes at a later time, online, since they wont show reruns, because the rest of my family is watching the hockey games. hopefully the ratings will go up with the new real world and the next challenge. Ya, I really don't think the playoffs are what was hurting the show. Let's be honest. the show is getting stale. I still love it, but to most of America (including my friends) the show is just getting oldddd. No TV show can last forever.

I just read that Judge Judy has averaged 6.4 million viewers over the past 3 months. Certainly some of the Challenge cast members are at least as crazy as the people who appear on JJ, so it's clear to me we just need her to host the next Challenge and the ratings will be through the roof! Let her say whatever she wants about the cast members!

Having JJ as a host would be terrible! Sorry but I don't think anybody would take that seriously

Because the challenge just beams seriousness.

It would be an even bigger joke. Are you kidding me? Judge Judy as the host, that's the dumbes idea I've heard.

Real World Road Rules Challenge (10PM) - 1.160 million viewers - 0.8/1 HH - 0.7/2 A18-49 - 1.5/5 W18-34

I can confirm from my own charts that that is 10PM. Cable ratings after 11PM are almost always unavailable to the public (and me, for that matter).

:( I think they should include online numbers, cause I missed the finale and I watched it online, and my friend watched half the episodes online, and I know other people who did the same.

Read the rest of the thread for the explanations/discussions about online viewing.

As of right this second, it has 93,000 views on mtv.com, which translates to a 0.08 in the HH ratings and - assuming every viewer was 18-49, which they clearly weren't - a 0.07 A18-49 rating.

They should move it back to Tuesday nights.

And compete with American Idol (when it's airing)?

It airs after Idol ends at 10pm. It wouldn't be in competition.

Oh, true. Sorry, I didn't think of that.

8 of every 10,000 Households and 7 of every 10,000 people 18-49 watched the show online. Not too much to gain there.

Why was the last weeks worth of discussion in this thread deleted?

Remember when I said that wasn't going to happen? Funny story, starting with the Fall schedule (unless it gets pushed back again) Neilsen is debuting "TVandPC", in which any commercial that airs during the original broadcast and is also included in the airing on Hulu or MTV/CBS/NBC/etc.com will have the computer viewership within 72 hours included in the final (unpublished) ratings. 7500 volunteer households will be included in the original sample, representing 20,000 people, and the viewing data will be tracked electronically using traditional Neilsen methods of recording who is watching. What does this mean for the Challenge? If MTV decides to include original commercials in their computer airings, about 50,000-200,000 more viewers per episode will be in the final numbers reported to advertisers, probably also adding .1 or .2 to the demo (they will not be included in the numbers reported here). The Challenge has been one of MTVs more successful online shows, so this could be critical to the renewal of The Challenge after the Challenge 21.
