Behind the Screen: Dancing with the Stars

For over two decades, MTV's The Challenge has been the proving ground where reality TV's fiercest competitors come to cement their legacies. What started as a Real World/Road Rules spinoff has evolved into one of the most physically and mentally demanding competition series on television.

The franchise's expansion — with spinoffs in the USA, UK, Argentina, and Australia — speaks to a global appetite for the brand of cutthroat competition and alliance-driven gameplay that Vevmo's community has been tracking since 2007.

I totally agree about the judges seeming to be extremely biased towards certain dancers. Chaz is terrible - absolutely terrible...

Totally disagree the judges are just doing their jobs. Hope is so bad, and Chaz is a terrible dancer. Look at the other performances and compar to Chaz. There is no Comparison. Yet he looks pissed off by the scores. Hope and Chaz do a mediocre job of doing basic choreography. What do you expect?
Len is doing his job when he is an ignorant, condescending ******* who has to comment on the dancer's shoes that are provided by the wardrobe department? Really? Watching him almost convinces me that euthenasia should be a common practice for people like him. Bruno is the stereotype of a sterotype. At least he doesn't pretend to be an expert on ballroom dance like Carrie Ann does. While in college, I taught ballroom dance in an Arthur Murray studio. I saw lots of students who knew more about ballroom than Carrie Ann. I was very please to see via Maksim's outburst at Len the manifestation of the long-standing frustration the pro dancers have had with the commentary of the judges over several seasons. For Carrie Ann to suggest that Maks was being disrespectful to Len is laughable. Kiss my Irish *****, Carrie Ann. You've been disrespectfull to ballroom dance pros for years. It's about time there was a little payback. **** you, ******!

I totally agree about the judges seeming to be extremely biased towards certain dancers. Chaz is terrible - absolutely terrible. The judges always say how bad the dance was - but then commend him for his effort. OK, that's cool, but then the score should reflect the DANCE not the effort/personality. They did this with Carson too - Len even said "That was a horrible dance but you'd get my vote" - what does that even mean??? How is that helpful?? I don't really think Hope is that good, but I do feel the judges are extra tough on her for some reason. Honestly, Maks has had it out with the judges before so I wonder if they just don't like him? Total and complete speculation that's probably untrue, but still something to ponder.

The judges got it right. Hope and Chaz are the two worst dancers by far. Their partners drag them around the dance floor. You could tell Lacey is sick of doing the same basic choreographahy. I don't understand why Chaz and Hope are upset with their scores. They can't honestly think they deserve a score anywhere as good as Ricki or JR.

I wasn't talking about the dance??? I was talking about how they criticize her for her work ethic, for the shoes, for her being "not feminine enough", yes she isn't the best dancer, but it is highly rude for them to do that to her. Thank you for reading right through my comment by the way.

How the hell is Nancy Grace still there? I didn't think she was very popular among Americans...

That's not what they are upset about. Chaz/Lacey are upset that their comments are borderline offensive (comparing Chaz to wild animals) and Hope/Maks are upset because they feel the judging criteria is not the same for each individual (which is obvious). Let's put it this way, there have been dances that the judges have given Nancy Grace 8's and 7's on that have been worse than dances David Arquette gets 6's and 7's. Seems they hold certain dancers to a higher standard and punish them for it. Just sayin...

Should we change the title of this thread to Dancing with Maks since this is his show?
Buck05#489
In his defense we might as well call it his show because this season had been pretty darn dull up until Monday night. He's made it interesting and I think he brought up some amazing points. Why do Ricki and JR even dance? Just have them start practicing their freestyles for the finals... They are a lock for the finals. Fans know it, the dancers know it, the producers know it, there's no suspense when it comes to those two (hence why they are always the first two saved on elimination nights). The only...and I mean only...thing that is left up for grabs is 3rd place - and I'm rooting for David or Rob.
Fresh Prince#490
JR and Ricki dance because it's a competition. Maks is out of his mind if he thinks the show is about him. I feel Chaz has a legitimate claim about the judge calling him a penguin but at the end of the day it's about dancing and they are not very good dancers.

I was kidding about JR and Ricki sitting out...

Are you kidding me? She is fantastic among us. Though she can be annoyingly blunt sometimes.

Don't count me among your "us." Can't stand her, and she can't dance...

Carson is gone, Chaz is gone, and Kristin is gone. I'm only rooting for Hope now, no offense to David, Nancy, or Ricki. If Hope doesn't make it I hope JR or Nancy win.

Interesting cast this season, comprised mostly of people I've heard of for once: Jaleel White, aka Stefan Urkel, with Kym Johnson Sherri Shepherd, The View co-host, with Val Chmerkovskiy Donald Driver, Green Bay Packers receiver, with Peta Murgatroyd Gladys Knight, legendary soul singer, with Tristan MacManus Maria Menunos, Extra and MTV host, with Derek Hough Martina Navratilova, tennis legend, with Tony Dovolani Gavin Degraw, singer, with Karina Smirnoff Katherine Jenkins, singer, with Mark Ballas Melissa Gilbert, actor (Little House on the Prairie), with Maksim Chmerkovskiy Jack Wagner, actor (Melrose Place), with Anna Trebunskaya Roshon Fegan, actor (Camp Rock!), with Chelsie Hightower William Levy, actor (various shows on Univision), with Cheryl Burke

I'm sooo disappointed with this cast!! I think I'll be passing this season...
saltvinegar#498
Damn, who on the production team hates Tristan? Poor guy got Nancy Grace last year and now he's stuck with Gladys Knight!
Aereas#499
Interesting cast... only heard of half of them, but that's better than usual. I'll be rooting for Maria/Derek and Roshon/Chelsie (although I have no idea who he is)!
V1man#500
Derek and Max have the early favorites, due to their strong fan bases who will support just about anyone they're paired with. Chelsie Hightower paired with Roshon Fegan may prove to be a big surprise. I've seen Maria dance; she's very athletic. If she has the patience to learn ballroom technique and deal with Derek's ego, she should go all the way. Here is something I didn't know about Melissa Gilbert: On July 22, 2010, Gilbert underwent surgery to replace a disc as well as fuse a vertebra in her lower spine. The surgery was described as a complete success. While playing the role of Caroline "Ma" Ingalls in the touring musical Little House on the Prairie, a visit to the doctor revealed that she had been working with a broken back for months. The good news for Tristan is probably that he'll get a quick retirement from the competition and be able to focus on the ensemble dances. I recall reading that the pay is the same for those out early and those who stay longer.

Television needs more Maria Menounos...good work ABC.

I'm not really a fan of the cast, but I haven't been for the past couple of years...

Didn't think Katherine Jenkins was known in the US.

I've never heard of her, but this show shouldn't be called Dancing with the Stars anymore. It's more like Dancing with the Z-List with a few exceptions.

Well shes not really that famous in the UK, sometimes you see her singing at the start of rugby match oh and she was engaged to a kids tv presenter.
ViewRam90#507
I can honestly say that I am not familiar with any of the cast besides Maria and William. This cast is really disappointing I think I'll pass on this season.

I know her from the Doctor Who Christmas Special a few years back. But if I wasn't so awesome and didn't watch Doctor Who, I would have no clue who she was.

Apparently ballroom dancing is also a contact sport... Maria Menunous -- MTV Challenge reunion show host -- is competing with two broken ribs. Maria Menounos broke ribs on Derek Hough's hardness + reality blurred
She's also wrestling at WrestleMania on Sunday. She'll probably do like 2 things in it, but still, she's got a lot on her plate.
Nostalgic#511
Martina is ok as a person but as a competitor she's got to go. As for DWTS, they need to get the original singers instead of these sorry replacemments, no offense. I can't believe Roshon is in the bottom. If he, Jaleel, Maria, Sherry, Donald or Jack go home then this season will go down as pure garbage. Also they need to be more original instead of the same dancers every season.
