Behind the Screen: The Challenge: Free Agents - Theresa Gonzalez

For over two decades, MTV's The Challenge has been the proving ground where reality TV's fiercest competitors come to cement their legacies. What started as a Real World/Road Rules spinoff has evolved into one of the most physically and mentally demanding competition series on television.

The franchise's expansion — with spinoffs in the USA, UK, Argentina, and Australia — speaks to a global appetite for the brand of cutthroat competition and alliance-driven gameplay that Vevmo's community has been tracking since 2007.

What really bugs me is why does Theresa keep getting picked before Laurel. Laurel is far and away the best female competitor on the show, yet she keeps getting picked after Theresa...

Because she's not in the midst of any drama and hasn't really performed that well, thus meaning no camera time, but I do see potential in Jonna and Theresa.

I do like Jonna lol but it would be a lie to say she's not wallpaper.

This is a stretch but perhaps those who aren't picking her know she won't ever have their back and want to take the chance that she'll lose on the other team and go into the elimination and lose. That way she won't get the chance to vote for them. Hopefully I made somewhat sense. Lol

I'd always pick CT & Laurel first. I think the reason Theresa gets picked over Laurel sometimes is that Theresa isn't "as difficult" to deal with. I'd want to kill Laurel working with her

Maybe because that's not necessarily what the other cast mates think?

Camila has gotten picked first so I don't think this is the case, lol.

I agree that Laurel would be more difficult to work work than Theresa but she's a better competitor. Picking Laurel over Theresa gives your team a better chance to win. Plain and simple. I like Theresa and she's probably easy going and easy to work with but she just doesn't compete like Laurel.

You did make some sense lol. On the other hand though, knowing that Laurel is such a large target, wouldn't you want her on your team so that the other team would pick her to go in instead of you? Although, that would mean that you would go into the draw and may have to face her. I think that we are thinking too in depth and the women on these challenges aren't that smart and wouldn't think of every angle like we do on here lol

I'm not sure how they wouldn't. Maybe they only think of Theresa balling when it comes time to pick. She was impressive and Laurel was only a cheerleader.
riggins#73
I agree Laurel seems like the obvious pick to me, but it may just come down to other people on the challenge just not liking her very much lol. Bananas seems to get it though, she was his first pick for the Bubble Football (?) challenge.

Don't know. Maybe they see things that we don't. They do after all, live with each other and have far more inside information than any of us do. I know Zach puts Theresa up there somewhere near the top.

That is a very interesting theory, because captains could theoretically pick all of the people (of your own gender) you'd want to go against, but then there would be a pretty high chance that you'd lose and go into the draw. The other thing is that the person who has first choice at the girls is the male team captain, which would disprove that the captain would be scared to pick Laurel. So far: Nia picked Laurel 2nd, Chet picked Theresa 7th for stair mission. Impact minimal on this mission. Swift picked Theresa 1st (sent to draw), Cahutta picked Laurel 3rd (won mission) on the bike mission. This mission came down to the guys' driving ability and the girls 'bike control. Laurel did well and Theresa never got a chance to do well. Zach picked Theresa 2nd (3rd or 4th place) and Leroy picked Laurel 3rd (2nd place) on the bar mission. Laurel was in a competitive position, Theresa was not. Bananas picked Theresa 3rd and Laurel 1st and won the ball mission. Laurel was shown defending Isaac well, and I don't remember Theresa in her heat. I would imagine she would be defending Zach. Johnny picked Theresa 1st, Camilla picked Laurel 2nd. Theresa dropped, Laurel made it across. Across the board Laurel outperformed Theresa this season whether they've had equal opportunity to perform or not. It's been surprising to see Theresa picked before Laurel time and time again and I'm not sure if it is due to the captains or not (Swift, Zach, Johnny).

I love Theresa, but if I was competing I would choose Laurel without a doubt. I would even picked Camila before her.

We have another challenge regular on are hands! :)

Eh. Not a fan. To me she doesn't bring much to the show and almost every challenge has pretty much been a puppet for people instead of being a leader. I still prefer her over some cast members but Theresa definitely isn't high on list.
Fresh Meat#81
Her shady move was anything BUT her being a puppet. Second season in the row we get some good gameplay drama from Theresa. Love it.

A throw away vote on Leroy/Ty was far from smart.

It wasn't...she made a common mistake though...she trusted Diem...no one should Ask Darrell, Derrick, Bananas and Mark

You said a second season in a row that we got good gameplay drama. I hardly call that move good gameplay. Good drama yes but not good gameplay.

Diem had already decided to send in Leroy/Ty before the vote even happened. What was she suppose to do change the vote last minute because the girl she had casual conversation with about a boy she liked threw away a vote on him without even telling him. That was Theresa's fault and a lack of communication on her part as well.

Should have worded that better. It wss good drama based off of gameplay. Diem's casual "I know math" is probably one of the funnier lines I have heard in an argument haha.

I probably won't listen to this. Could someone tell me why he chose her?
Listened to the podcast on the way home from work. I didn't really understand his reasoning, but someone chime in if the made any sense of it. When it came to working out and who had the most drive, Johnny ranked the top 3 girls as Cara, Theresa, and Laurel, somewhat in that order. He then said he would try not to select people who he was alligned with (Zach, CT, Cara, Jordan). He said he picked Theresa over Laurel because he thought Theresa had more drive, then I don't know why he thought Cara would be picked before Laurel, but he ended up with Cara anyway. He said that the order of how they sit during the voting is random and however they walk into the room. He said that all of the cast members wanted to pick first in the draw over the end because they thought that they had a better shot of not selecting the kill card if they went first (argument we had in the Stripes thread), so they decided that by drawing cards. Johnny seems like a chill dude.

I'm curious to see how many Nia fans love Johnny now that they're friends.

It wasn't good gameplay at all. If she was on Big Brother fine, but it wasn't any way in the world her scheme wouldn't gotten back to Laurel. No way....
WESANDNANYFAN#91
Theresa/Laurel already weren't on great terms before this challenge so she should of just man up and threw her in instead of putting an even bigger target on her back.
