Behind the Screen: Challenge Casts: Anything Goes

For over two decades, MTV's The Challenge has been the proving ground where reality TV's fiercest competitors come to cement their legacies. What started as a Real World/Road Rules spinoff has evolved into one of the most physically and mentally demanding competition series on television.

The franchise's expansion — with spinoffs in the USA, UK, Argentina, and Australia — speaks to a global appetite for the brand of cutthroat competition and alliance-driven gameplay that Vevmo's community has been tracking since 2007.

That's a question I've always had. If they would call to do challenges some of the people who never made it onto the rv on RW VR. I'd like to see the latin girl who argued with I believe it was either Veronica or Kina. I can usually see a rationale behind BMP choosing most of these castmembers. They're either good on an athletic level, or they bring the drama and are good tv and fun to watch. With this said, I really don't understand why they keep calling Paula again. She's clearly not a strong competitor, she's boring and she's not even hot. I honestly don't see why BMP likes her so much. The only other castmember I remember them liking so much and calling her for so many consecutive challenges was Veronica, but man Veronica, love her or hate her, was such good tv. Her feuds with Emily and later on with Katie, to me are priceless lol. Oh and Veronica was also a decent competitor who for the most part pulled her own weight.

It's all about perceived fan base and guaranteed drama. Some say it's also about who you are "doing" inside MTV, but I know nothing about such things... ;)

Haha, her name was Ivory and she argued with Tori and Susie. She was somewhat entertaining.

Where I feel that she was definitely robbed was on The Duel. In my opinion she beat Svetlana fair and square and idc about some stupid rules the decided to come up with to alter the results.
I've always felt the same, and I am aware that the version of the rules that was stated to the cast before the competition took place was even different than how it was presented on the edited program (with the unaired rules lending more credence to Beth). But I always felt the way it was presented on TV still made it completely unjustifiable to disqualify Beth. I can't remember it verbatim but it was something like "you can't just rip off the carabiner, you have to unclip the flag." Beth did rip the carabiner but it never started in the rules under any reasonable interpretation that it was prohibited, instead it was stated that ripping it was insufficient to win. She went on to unclip the flag, thus doing what was sufficient to win. That always bothered me.

It bothered Beth too, but she elected to laugh at TJ and the producers, which you didn't see, because that was not the reaction production wanted. It took about 35 minutes for production to decide what to do immediately after the flag was torn. We suspect the on-scene people had to contact MTV and BMP for "ratings" guidance. It was a sham and everyone present knew it.

Which really sucks...the fact that they could not find any material to edit it in such a way that made the disqualification justifiable to the otherwise uninformed viewer really displays the (lack of) quality of BMP's competitive shows

I remember being mad as hell about that because I really wanted Beth to win - she got robbed!

SHE had the duel in the bag; she got robbed. I agreed.

CT got ripped off worse than Beth did. She actually looked like she tore the flag up pretty bad, the flag and string looked to be all in tact when CT got it off. Plus he was right at the end and probably would've beaten Wes in the next misison, Beth still had a ways to go until the end and I don't really think she would've faired to well had she drawn the Ascender card.

You're just wrong... but there is no reason for you to know differently. The clip and flag ( a small square of rayon cloth) separated at the clip's connection point which was less that 1/4 inch from the edge of the cloth. I've been told by two cast members that when this duel was played again, the clips were attached differently to the cloth -- and the cloth may also have been changed. That is why it appeared to separate in a different way for CT. As for Ascender, that was a specific task set that Beth trained for in the two months before The Duel. The one thing she did not want to do early on was to tip her hand about having trained at all for the challenge, which she had only done for two weeks before Gauntlet 2. The only thing Beth never trained for was rowing. That has since been fixed. If she does the summer challenge, she will do a boot camp that encompasses aerobic and anaerobic fitness and specific skill sets common to the challenges.

I think we need to have a cross over challenge. It should consist of MTV and VH1 dysfunction.

That ideas has actually been discussed in a meeting in LA that I heard about. The concept didn't get any traction, but everyone recognizes the potential. It may have to happen in a new incarnation of Battle of the Network Reality Stars.

I think it would be sensational to watch The Entertainer be unleashed on Kenny and Evan.
Bucky#105
Entertainer would get wrecked, those VH1 shows are full of posers who couldn't beat up anybody if they tried.
ColiesMom#106
FYI.. There was a challenge airing while Denver was filming. I was not an MTV watcher prior to Colie doing TRW. I did not know that one show leads to another. Every call we had during the filming ended with mommy please don't watch the "name of challenge" please promise. Since I had no desire to watch I listened. If I knew then what I knew now!!!! (I can believe in my mind that she would have listened to me).

When I said "unleashed on Kenny and Evan", I meant his personality more than his athletic skills. LOL.
