People hire sky writers or planes with banners to fly over the open area of the Big Brother house in order to tell the housemates something. something that could effect the game...

The problem represented by banners was something addressed by CBS Standards and Practices between the first and second seasons when a new production company was brought in. One of the major concerns was that what was printed on the banners could be prejudicial to one or more cast members and could influence decisions made by people in the house. In fact, the message board history at the time clearly indicated that it was the intent of people who bought banners to "inform" the house guests and, therefore, influence them. While many people found the idea of banners to be an interesting and even fun addition to BB, it was a problem because the banners likely violated The Game Show Act, the series of Federal Government regulations designed to ensure the fairness of television game shows in which prizes are awarded based on certain set of rules known to all cast members/contestants. Under the FCC rules, any person, not just someone in the cast, can make a formal complaint to the FCC. Under it's "due diligence" obligation to the law, its contracted cast and its stockholders, CBS was duty bound to do its best to ensure it protected the integrity of the game. Failure to do so would have subjected CBS and the production company to lawsuits by everyone evicted after the first banner flew over the house that was seen by at least one cast member. In my professional opinion, the likelihood of CBS losing those suits would have been 100%. (X number of suits times at least $500,000 (first prize) is quickly lots of real money.) (PS. I was a CBS consultant at the time)

Banner planes can definitely effect the game and season 8 was bad for those. It definitely sent Eric into the hot seat then and sent **** into a rage. Whether it was the main reason or just that he had Eric's exit planned then this happened. But they can affect the game somewhat among some other more serious things so it's understandable that they did something about it.

Does anyone know what the banner said? Did it really say what Memphis said it said?

looked like, "HAPPY BIRTHDAY WE <3 YOU" blog link

Some people tried to lie about what it said to the others probably to stir something but I think it probably said something harmless over all. Honestly though I wouldn't change my game in there if I saw a banner.

You're welcome. I didn't see the show (since I'm not watching), but I heard from a friend at CBS that they were going to mention the banner on the live Thursday show because it had nothing to do with Big Brother. It was just one of the many banner planes that advertise stuff over the LA area. Apparently there was an internal discussion if just the mention of it would encourage someone to try to do something, but CBS is confident in their relationship with the companies that fly banners. They don't think it will be problem they can't handle.
