Behind the Screen: Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations

For over two decades, MTV's The Challenge has been the proving ground where reality TV's fiercest competitors come to cement their legacies. What started as a Real World/Road Rules spinoff has evolved into one of the most physically and mentally demanding competition series on television.

The franchise's expansion — with spinoffs in the USA, UK, Argentina, and Australia — speaks to a global appetite for the brand of cutthroat competition and alliance-driven gameplay that Vevmo's community has been tracking since 2007.

Nice to know that I am not the only Bourdain fan on the block. I was quite excited to see that there is an episode tonight that I actually have not seen...

Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations

Bacchus ·
I decided today to hit the "Vault" and view a recorded show that has been sadly left to waste with all the flashy new fall programming hitting the airwaves over the past few weeks. One of my longtime favorite series is Anthony Bourdain's, No Reservations. I was fortunate enough to have the most recent Tuscany episode safely tucked away on the hard drive of my DVR, and felt now was as good a time as ever to consume this appetizing program. For those of you not familiar with Anthony's Bourdain's body of work, he is a long time New York Chef who made his debut on television with the Food Network and more recently is cavorting around the World with the Travel Channel. He is also a well respected author, writing a number of bestselling books about food and the industry that surrounds the creation of fabulous cuisine. He is outspoken, funny, and will eat anything. I mean anything - coca leaves, baby seal, warthog rectum, et al. That is what makes his show so interesting, so different. Not to mention that he enjoys dictating out his take on life whilst getting drunk with cigarette in hand, sans guilt. No Reservations is a journey that is narrated by the semi lucid poetry of Bourdain's psyche spilling out onto the digital canvas that is the television. It leaps forward with each astonishing culinary and cultural experience and we always know everything is out in the open and on the line. He has no qualms with taking risks with his food, his health or his psychical safety and that is what provides us with an organic, realist view of the "off the beaten path" places he visits. His "Johnny-come-lately" visit to Tuscany captured the essence of everything I enjoy about the series. The episode was sold to us as a vacation of sorts for the star and crew, when in "reality" there was a wacked out director that wanted to turn the episode - which was promising at the outset as far as Anthony was concerned- into an dark homage to Dante's Inferno. Only on this show would such a convoluted storyline actually succeed, and it did succeed. We got a great feeling for, and could almost taste, the varied meats, cheeses, pastas and culture that embodied the region. Tuscany was amazing and even though we have seen it a million times before. It was just better this time, it really was. Then it hit me... I was tricked into watching all the new programming for the last two weeks that the major networks have force fed me, and when I finally realize that what I really enjoy is the quasi-tormented rantings of Chef Druggie, Anthony Bourdain - I find out that was the last episode; the season is over! Oh well. I guess it will make it that much better when it returns next year. I'll be looking forward to new episodes of No Reservations in 2008.

I too love this show. I just watched 2 episodes yesterday (Brazil, Puerto Rico.)I try to watch it every week.Tony is funny and rude yet charming and informative. He has his own way of seeing the world. I love it. My kind of people. Can't wait for next season.

Nice to know that I am not the only Bourdain fan on the block. I was quite excited to see that there is an episode tonight that I actually have not seen! Maybe the positive light I shined on the series in my above statement was enough of a "little prayer" for the television Gods to offer me up an unseen episode, in gratitude? Well, more likely just the luck of the draw, but I'll take it. I consulted the episode guide over on IMDB and it looks like one slipped through the cracks of my DVR's omnipresent electronic gaze - and is the only one remaining that I have not had the pleasure of watching over the three season run.

Ya, ummm, Man vs. Food is hardy congruous to the richly complex dystopic musings of Sir Anthony Bourdain and his epicurean travels to the far flung reaches of our culturally multifarious terrestrial sphere. I take offense! I do! :D

Actually, Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern is probably what you are thinking of although Bourdain will eat anything offered to him - being it would be disrespectful to do otherwise when you are a guest of another culture. Fine. I shall watch alone, again this year!

your not watching alone sweetheart I watch it too . I watched it last night, he was in mexico. They also give him everyday at 1pm.And I also watch man vs. food. I think it is funny that that man isn't 1000 lbs. from all the food he shovels into his mouth. But tony is my absolute fav.And I've been watching since he did "a cooks tour" on the food network. So Bacc. we can watch together:)

The Mexico episode was fun! I think the reason that I like this show is because this is how I personally would want to travel if I could. Screw the tourist sites, show me the best Catina in town and lets eat some street food along the way! Also, his ongoing commentary is hilarious. He is as talented a writer as he is an entertainer. Unlike most of the button down food and travel hosts out there, he brings an edginess to the show that I enjoy. Ok OPD, the verdict is out. You have to catch an episode now!

LoL Ok! I've seen it on a few times here and there, just not recently. LM~Refresh my memory....I thought I saw an episode this summer where he explored the "NorthWest" (Seattle and Portland). I watched that one when he was in Portland and he went to VooDoo Donuts downtown! Now....that was Anthony Bordain right? Or am I mistaking it with another show?

That is why you must watch! Two of the best episodes are: 1. When he goes on an Absinthe binge in Germany and 2. When tries the tribal medicine man's goodies in the Amazon. :D

Lust, lust, lust is what I have for Anthony Bourdain - I don't mind reruns late at night but I'm ecstatic that there will be new episodes. More eating indigenous food while barefoot and trash talking about Rachel Ray. I can't wait. PS - I can't stomach Rachel Ray and her annoying verbage (or accent, or lack of culinary training/talent....) . I wish she'd take $40 a day and make a 30 minute shut-the-hell-up. Really, some run down bar is missing it's wench. *exhale* Sorry... I get carried away.

Every time I hear Rachel Ray's voice, I instantly think of Kenny Santucci and want to :dash2: or just :puke: I know she is from Mass. by way of Lake George, NY and Manhattan, but to me she sounds like the worst of "Jersey."

I hate Rachel Ray with a passion. I love it when Tony takes cheap shots at her. :D

Oh ya, he loves picking on all TV Chefs, but especially Rachel Ray. He used to beat on Emeril as well, but they had a moment in an episode about New Orleans and I think he came around because of the lengths that Emeril when to in keeping his staff employed and housed even through the restaurant was devastated (after Katrina.)
